Einen wirklich lohnenden Tag verbringe ich im Chaco Canyon. Die Siedlungen der Anasazi Indianer, deren grösste - Pueblo Bonito - einst über 800 Räume aufwies, beeindruckten mich sehr. Um ca. 1'100 errichtet, wurden sie während ungefähr hundert Jahren bewohnt und dann offenbar plötzlich aufegegebn und verlassen. Da die Anasazi keine Schrift hatten und deshalb auch keine entsprechenden Informationen zurückliessen, wird noch heute über die Gründe dieses plötzlichen Aufbruchs gerätselt. Die wahrscheinlichste Ursache könnte eine mehrjährige Trockenheit gewesen sein, welche die mit grossen Wissen und Können angelegten Reservoirs und das Wasser im den Canyon durchfliessenden "wash" versiegen liess.
Während der mehrstündigen Wanderung am obern Canyonrand entlang begleiten mich grosse schwarze Raben mit ihrem rauhen Gekrächz. Die Aussichten auf die umliegende Wüste sind atemberaubend.
